A set of crisp images claiming to be a pair of ribbon cables is perhaps the first look at the real components of a long-rumored and highly anticipated VR headset.

A set of photos of the foursome were posted to Twitter on Monday by a leaker with no comment, save for an emoji wearing sunglasses. If original, the four images depict what could be ribbon cables that are part of an Apple VR headset.

The cables offer relatively few clues as to how the headset is built, but the shape of the component definitely indicates that it’s attached to the headset. With two large arched sections connected by a smaller one in the middle, the main cable can be thought of as the top half of a pair of glasses.

One end of one cable has a connector that is inserted into an element, while the other end has a socket for easy connection to the other parts. It also appears that each end has smaller connectors as well, while strategically placed holes and rings are likely used to hold the strap in place inside the headphone enclosure.

This cable appears to be designed to be above the eyes of the user.

A second straight cable is also depicted, apparently with three main sections. At one end, a row of pins pops up on the bar, making it easy to connect to the other components again.

The leaker is working from a protected account, so the tweet itself cannot be embedded. However, the leaker is known, and has a proven track record of upcoming Apple products.

Apple is currently expected to present its virtual reality glasses in 2023, and the most likely venue is WWDC this summer.

It is believed to have been built in a similar fashion to Meta Quest 2, i.e. “ski goggles” construction, but to a much higher specification. This includes automatically adjusting the lenses so that the user has an optimal vision experience for high quality OLED screens.

The headset can also work without the need for a host device to boot, with one rumor back in February saying it could be set up without the need for an iPhone, connecting to iCloud directly and being able to download content without outside help from an iPhone, for example.

All of this can come at a huge premium to consumers, with the price believed to be as high as $3,000.
