Mac Studio may not update with M2 Ultra soon or at all, due to Mac Pro.
Apple’s introduction of the M2 Pro and M2 Max in January, as well as the specification upgrade to the Mac mini, may not necessarily follow similar updates to Mac Studio. With Apple keen to launch the Apple Silicon Mac Pro, it is believed that the Mac Studio update with the M2 Ultra chip may be delayed, or even halted.
The new Mac Pro with Apple Silicon is expected to launch in the spring, complete with the M2 Ultra chip. However, the prospect of two Macs using the M2 Ultra could present a problem for Apple, as one could cannibalize sales of the other.
According to Mark Gurman in his “Power On” newsletter for bloombergthe Mac Pro is functionally similar to the Mac Studio, and thus it “doesn’t make sense” for Apple to offer both the M2 Ultra Mac Studio and the M2 Ultra Mac Pro at the same time.
“It is likely that Apple either never updates Mac Studio or stops until the M3 or M4 generation,” Gorman wrote. By then, Apple will have a chance to “better differentiate” the Mac Studio from the Mac Pro.
The Mac Pro was previously expected to have an “M2 Extreme” chip, which actually stacks two M2 Ultra chips into a single piece of silicon, but it was ruled out in December due to supposed production issues.
