Samsung’s three latest S23 series smartphones have been unveiled, marking the first major new phone release of the year and the emergence of another real competitor to the iPhone 14 and Pixel 7. You’ll get a fast new processor, better cameras and an improved design.

The lineup contains the standard Galaxy 23, the slightly larger S23+, and the powerful S23 Ultra, which has a built-in stylus, a 200-megapixel (MP) camera and the largest battery of the three. Pre-orders are open now, across the Samsung store, network providers and UK retailers including Sky Mobile, Currys, EE and Amazon.

Samsung S23 release date and pricing

The three new Samsung S23 phones were unveiled on February 1, 2023, with pre-orders from the UK opening on the same day. They go on sale from February 17, 2023. how much do they cost? Here is a breakdown of how much you can expect to pay:

• Samsung S23 – 128GB: £849, 256GB: £899
• Samsung S23 Plus – 256GB: £1,049, 512GB: £1,149
• Samsung S23 Ultra – 256GB: £1,249, 512GB: £1,399, 1TB: £1,599

Samsung S23 Series: What’s New?

Changes from the previous generation S22 are minor across all three new smartphones – the biggest design change being the removal of the camera bump on the back of the devices. The screen sizes are the same as last year’s models (6.1-inches, 6.6-inches, and 6.8-inches), and they all retain the 120Hz refresh rate. The Ultra has unique aesthetics – the S-Pen slots into the bottom of the frame so you can use it as a mini tablet – yes, it looks a lot like the Galax_{y times 4.}

So, most of the major upgrades happen indoors. The S23 Ultra has the largest battery (5,000mAh capacity compared to 3,900mAh in the S23) but that’s not too surprising since it needs the extra juice to handle the big screen and deliver the improved performance and speed expected from more expensive flagships. The Ultra is the only model that gets the 1TB option (only available via Samsung’s website) and a 200MP camera, an upgrade from the S22 Ultra’s 108MP shooter.

The S23 and S23+ updates are fairly slim — each comes with a 50MP camera sensor — but we always appreciated the inclusion of a better selfie camera and larger battery capacity, as well as the inclusion of the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip which means performance should stay fast when Open apps or games. The camera bump on the back of the devices has now been completely removed, with the three circular lenses now blending seamlessly into the back shell.
