It was recently revealed that Anker Eufy was sending data from its cameras to the cloud, despite the announcement to the contrary. Now, Eufy has updated its app with a clearer disclosure that it sends data to the cloud when certain settings are enabled.
To sum up Eufy’s security issues, there were two major problems. First, Eufy was advertising its cameras and video doorbells with only local recording to bolster security, but a security researcher found that the company was uploading images from cameras to AWS servers along with facial recognition data. The second problem was a huge security hole that allowed streaming cameras from third-party media players like VLC.
For the latter situation, Eufy explained that it uploaded “thumbnails” of captured clips to users’ cameras to deliver notifications from mobile apps. While the security researcher is the first to reveal this problem He argues that this is an understatement situation, the main problem was that the data was loaded without any notice.
As I spotted it ZDNet, Eufy has updated its Eufy Security app on iOS to show “When users choose to push thumbnails.” The statement is visible in the Settings menu, as shown below.
It seems that the update, as of now, is still missing on Android.
However, Eufy still denies the other major vulnerability found in its systems. The company has been mentioned in several publications including the edge It is “not possible to start a broadcast and watch live footage using a third party player like VLC” although many researchers and journalists have proven otherwise on multiple occasions.
