Remove backgrounds from photos on Mac

With iOS 16 arriving before macOS Ventura, users have been able to quickly remove backgrounds from photos with just a few clicks on iPhone and iPad. Fortunately, the capability is also available with macOS Ventura and can be accessed in two different ways. Here’s how to remove backgrounds from photos on a Mac.

Automatically removing the background from images often meant mixed results. For precise cutting, manual labor in Photoshop, Pixelmator, or another program has historically yielded the best results.

However, Apple has included an impressive near-instant image background removal performance in both iOS 16 and macOS Ventura. In our usage, the feature has always worked accurately with people, pets, and inanimate objects.

The only downside is that macOS automatically chooses what it sees as a theme, and there’s no manual control. But it’s still a really useful tool.

When you use any of the options below, your Mac will create a PNG file of the theme that you can use in photo-editing applications, send someone a quick message, jot down a note, or use in any other way you want.
