TRAI is seeking opinions on a proposal to display caller name on mobile phones

New Delhi: Customers will soon be able to see the name of the caller on their mobile phones, as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has sought feedback from all stakeholders on the proposal.

Stakeholders are expected to give their views on the proposal in a TRAI advisory paper titled “Introduction of Connection Name Presentation in Telecom Networks”, until December 27, 2022 while counter-comments were requested by January 10, 2023. The regulator has asked if this proposal should be mandatory or not.

Through the paper, which was released on Wednesday, TRAI also asked whether or not the customer’s name mentioned on the order form (while applying for a connection) should be used to display on the device.

It also sought stakeholder opinions on how to obtain customers’ permission to implement this proposal.

If the suggestion goes into effect, the name of the person making the call will be visible on the recipient’s phone, even if the number is not saved in the recipient’s device.

TRAI feels this step can help prevent spam or fraudulent calls. Currently, users are taking help from an app called Truecaller to trace the origin of the person or entity that is making the call.
