Buying a phone on Cyber Monday: what to look for
Smartphones are so expensive these days that a $10 / £10 discount just doesn’t cut the mustard. But if you’re looking for a discount of $50 / £50 or more, things quickly get confusing: what’s the usual price, and is it cheap because it’s an older model? Are you being deceived in some way?
During Cyber Monday, retailers will usually offer the best prices they’ve offered all year, but that doesn’t mean all retailers can be trusted – especially if you’re buying from an unknown quantity just to get a little extra percentage off the purchase price.
If the phone costs $999 / £999 and is on sale for $600 / £600, this is clearly a good deal! Go get it! But be aware that retailers are increasingly selling refurbished models for less, and it’s not always clear what’s brand new and what isn’t.
Verify that the phone is unlocked, or at least locked to your carrier. Some deals may also have cashback options and special tariffs with certain networks, but if you can afford to do that, it’s always a good idea to buy a phone outright.
