HTC is preparing to return to the smartphone market in July this year with a 5G smartphone. Once revered as a leader in the business, the Taiwanese phone maker is now struggling to stay afloat. The yet-to-be-announced device will be HTC’s first 5G-ready offering, a milestone most of its competitors have been hitting for some time.
It’s been a while since HTC released a proper flagship, so a Snapdragon 865-powered phone is in the cards. However, HTC could also go the Google route and opt for the 5G-ready Snapdragon 7xx SoC to keep prices down. HTC is running on a mid-ranger as well, according to Eprice. It is expected to come as Desire 20 Pro, which will feature a Snapdragon 6xx chipset, 6GB of RAM, and a triple camera setup.
5G services will be available in Taiwan from July, making it an ideal time for HTC to unveil its phone. However, the bigger question is, will this be enough to get HTC back on the radar? The smartphone market has only gotten more competitive since HTC’s collapse, and the company will have to offer much more than just nostalgia points for any hope of survival.
