Asus ROG Phone 6 review: a real premium gaming phone

The Asus ROG Phone series caters to the niche gaming segment. The latest ROG Phone 6 comes with an improved design language and internally too, it has well-upgraded specifications over its predecessor.

I’ve been using the device for about a week and here are my thoughts on the premium gaming smartphone.

Design, build quality and presentation

The Asus ROG Phone 6 stands out for its uniqueness and one of the best attractive smartphone design languages in the industry.

The Black Illusion model looks amazing in the sunlight and has value-added features on its back, which makes it even more beautiful for gamers. It features a dual LED RGB display with the ROG (Republic of Gamers) Fearless Eye dot-matrix logo and supports a color gradient theme using two different colors at once. Users can also customize the lighting with multiple colors and several pre-set mood lighting schemes.

It also has not one but two Type-C ports, which is another unique feature among the phones. The second port in the center (in landscape mode) comes in handy while connecting accessories such as the AeroActive Cooler 6 to reduce heat while playing graphic-intensive games, or battery packs to make the phone last longer.

Also, it is one of the very few devices that boasts a 3.5mm audio jack, which once again helps users put on their favorite wired headphones to get slow sync audio while playing battle royale, shooter, or adventure like action-genre video games.

It also features an IPX4 water resistance certification, which means that the device can withstand accidental splashes of water. The company also offers a good quality slim case, which comes with thick cushions at all four edges, to ensure that the phone can withstand accidental drops. It also does not add much weight to the phone and also the thickness. Yes, the phone is big for the average user, but the case provides more grip for the fingers to hold on to the phone.

And the case has open spaces around the edge to ensure that the AirTrigger 6’s ultrasonic sensors can take pressure input from fingers while playing games.

The Asus ROG Phone 6 features a 6.78-inch full-HD+ (2448 x 1080 pixels) OLED display with Pixelworks i6 processor. The screen supports a 165Hz refresh rate, 720Hz touch sampling rate, and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. The screen is protected by a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Victus glass cover.

Browsing and reading content on the big screen is a smooth experience, and even better while playing games.

It also features an in-display fingerprint sensor and works well as advertised. It is very responsive to the impression of the finger and unlocks the screen with a lower false rejection rate.

ROG Phone 6 is powered by the 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ processor, which is currently the most powerful chipset we’ve seen in all of Android’s premium phones. Yes, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 was unveiled just a week ago, but Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 will be able to guarantee the phone’s performance and fast response, meeting user expectations for a long time.
The chip can clock a peak CPU speed of up to 3.2GHz and is powered by the next generation Adreno GPU.

Also, ROG Phone 6 features the GameCool 6 cooling system that incorporates 360-degree CPU cooling technology, a 30 percent larger vapor chamber and 85 percent larger graphite sheets, along with a CPU design for increased heat dissipation from the core. .

Also during the review period, the Asus phone did an excellent job in terms of thermal performance, which is the best I’ve seen so far this year.

Combined with Armory Crate’s new performance manager, the ROG Phone 6 series allows gamers to adjust performance settings for different games, giving them a competitive edge in any gaming scenario.

Also, while setting up the phone, Asus has done a good job of providing tips on how to make the best use of gaming-focused features like the Air Trigger sensors around the edge and also the Armory Crate for the best gaming experience. I had a great time playing Asphalt 9: Legend and loved the haptic feedback of the engine whenever you hit the Nitro to increase the speed of the car while racing, the vibration sensation makes it a more engaging gaming experience.

Even though it’s running the old Android 12, you won’t miss much because Android 13 doesn’t have any major improvement over its predecessor. It’s easy to get the ROG user interface on the phone within a few hours of use.

As far as battery life is concerned, it comes with two 3,000mAh cells, with a total capacity of 6,000mAh. It can last up to 2 days under normal use. If you’re an extreme user and play games for several hours a day, this phone will easily be able to get you through a full day without any worries about running out of the device before dinner time at home.

Also, it comes with a 65W charger, and it took just over an hour for the device to fully charge from scratch to 100 percent. In 40 minutes, it can reach the 65 percent mark.

The new Asus phone features a triple camera module – the main 50-megapixel (1/1.56-inch Sony IMX766 sensor, 1 µm pixel size, f/1.9) along with a 13-megapixel 125-degree wide-angle camera (f/2.4) and a 5-megapixel macro sensor (f/ 2.0).

ROG Phone 6’s camera shines best in natural lighting conditions. Image quality is very good outdoors and the flowers of my main subjects look vibrant with rich colours. Yes, the images are a little warmer than what we see with our eyes. But having said that, the photos are really good and worth sharing on social media platforms.

The portrait mode is also up to the mark. As you can see in the sample photo, the camera does a good job of creating a depth-of-field effect between the subject in the foreground and the background. Also, the fringe around the stem of the flower bud is also well defined.

As far as night mode is concerned, the ROG Phone 6 camera has managed to preserve the essence of darkness in the night sky. Unlike others, it does not blow the frame with too much light and end up creating an image with a twilight atmosphere.

With an ultra wide angle, the phone does a good job of accommodating a wide area. Most phones in an effort to cover more space within the frame end up with curved structures and end up looking very artificial. Here, the ROG Phone 6 does not falter in this aspect.

It supports video recording up to 8K at 30fps (frames per second), 4K at 60fps, 4K slow motion at 120fps, 1080p at 240fps, and 720p at 480. frames per second.

Video quality is good, on par with most premium phones on the market.

On the front, the ROG Phone 6 has a 12MP (Sony IMX663 sensor). It takes very good selfies outdoors with natural sunlight. Even indoors, photos are decent at best.

Final thoughts
If I had to describe the Asus ROG Phone 6 in two words – ‘Gamer’s Delight’. Featuring a unique design and made especially for gamers and internally as well, it has everything to offer an immersive smooth gaming experience. And the value-added Air Trigger feature makes it even more attractive.

And it has one of the best thermal performances of any phone I’ve reviewed this year so far. Even the battery life is excellent.

Overall, ROG Phone 6 is a complete package of a gaming phone.

In India, the Asus ROG Phone 6 will be available in two colors – Phantom Black and Storm White – for Rs 71,999 (12GB RAM + 256GB storage).

Along with e-commerce sites, Asus is bringing its premium gaming phone to Vijay Sales for the first time.

The company is also creating demo areas in the Vijay Sales showroom to provide potential customers with a first-hand experience of using and playing the games, and help them make an informed decision to purchase them.
