Anatoly Yakovenko, Co-Founder of Solana Labs, took the stage last night at Disrupt, TechcrunchAnnual Global Startup ConferenceAnd the He hinted that the new Solana Saga smartphone will offer a new alternative to the existing business models used by companies such as Google and Apple.
“That’s one of the big moments,” he said, calling the epic an experience “cheap enough to try.” He added that it could challenge the current rental models used in Google and Apple’s app stores, which can take up to 30% of developers’ revenue.
“It’s built around a rent-seeking model where all the content is owned by the creator and you as the user rent it,” he said. “When you buy a video on Amazon, you don’t actually own it; everyone knows you don’t own it.”
Yakovenko also explained that Solana does not expect a high sales volume for the Saga, adding that he would be “very happy to sell 25,000 to 50,000 units next year”.
Solana phone joins the growing market
Solana Saga announced back in june Together with Solana Mobile Stack (SMS), a resource for developing native Android apps, wallets, and games, along with a decentralized app store.
The phone itself features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, a 6.67-inch OLED display, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of internal storage. The device will be sold for around $1,000 in the first quarter of next year.
Although manufacturers including HTC and Samsung have launched smartphones with crypto features including built-in hardware wallets, Solana aims to take things a step further.
One of the main selling points of Saga Device is its full integration with the Solana Mobile Stack, which will allow for smoother access to Crypto walletsseamless use of Solana Pay and access to Solana-based applications, including games, DeFi applications and NFT markets.
The Solana Mobile Stack isn’t limited to the Saga phone, but if Android phone makers like Google and Samsung want to get in on the action, they’ll have to adopt and adapt the software to enable full functionality on their own devices. Yakovenko.
