Recently, we have seen new leaks of Google Pixel Fold. Since we don’t have much to talk about with phones, we’re talking about foldable phones. We’ve heard rumors of foldable phones from Apple and Google every year, ever since Samsung strengthened its commitment with the foldable Galaxy Z family. This does not mean that anyone should bet on Apple’s iPhone Flip.
Rumors about Apple folding are raging. Behind closed doors, a representative from Samsung Mobile Experience was heard to say this Samsung expects Apple to release the foldable iPad device within two years, by 2024.
Samsung is also rumored to be producing a foldable display for the Google Pixel foldable phone. So, the comments from Samsung on Apple’s foldable plans seem to be considered gospel truth, but these are two different Samsung rollouts.
Samsung Display is owned by the Samsung Group, but operates a media firewall between it and other entities. This is precisely because it can sell displays to Samsung Mobile as well as the Google Pixel group.
If Samsung Mobile knew everything about Samsung Display sales, it would have a clear intelligence advantage over competitors. It was the executive who speculated about the foldable iPad from the Mobile Group, not Samsung Display. He will probably have an excellent guess, but not hard facts.
Maybe Apple made an iPhone Flip that we just can’t get enough of
Of course, Apple is supposed to be working on a foldable tablet. It also probably has a foldable phone, and maybe even a foldable watch. why not? It’s one thing to create a unique example of technology within the company. It is another matter to launch a new device in the global market and supply chain.
Samsung’s comments likely mean that Apple could have a foldable iPad ready as early as 2024. Whether it will actually launch and sell such a device is another story.
Of course, it needs to improve something, anything at all, to keep selling new hardware. Every year there must be an update justifying the new product. We’re not sure that foldable displays will be the upgrade of choice for Apple.
The phones don’t have any major surprises coming
There isn’t much you can improve on the phone at the moment. New phone technology cannot sneak up on us easily. Whenever new camera capabilities come to market, we hear about them first Qualcommwhich makes image signal processors, or Sony, which makes image sensors.
We hear about new foldable and roll-out displays from Samsung Display and LG Display before they’re ever sold to phone manufacturers. The new network technology is being demonstrated by mobile network providers. Even minor advances in battery technology and data storage were first announced by someone else.
Maybe there are rotatable phones coming. There are wearable devices for your face eventually coming. There will be new wearable concepts for rings, glasses, clothing and more. We’ve seen concepts and leaks. All of this is based on slow and steady progress in manufacturing and core technology.
In other words, we won’t have a foldable phone until there is a factory that can produce it at a price that manufacturers can swallow. We have no idea how much such a phone would cost, but foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 are not embarrassed when they approach $2,000 / £2,000 / AU$3,000 per year, and the market ignores them at that price.
New phones must be new in order to fold
Why bother manufacturers? Folding phones They make up less than 1% of the entire phone market, according to the industry website electricity. Samsung is dedicating one of its keynote events to a device that most people won’t see in person, let alone consider buying. This year marked the fourth year that it has demonstrated a commitment to the concept by launching the next generation with the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
The reason why phone makers fold phones is because that’s all they can do at the moment. They need to show progress to keep people interested in the phone market. The fold is slowly becoming an affordable option, with the Galaxy Z Flip 4 (arguably a more attractive device than the Galaxy Z Fold 4) starting at $999.99 / £999 / AU$1,499, and carriers will give you one for free with the usual contract terms.
Apple does not need to enter this market. There is nothing in Apple’s history to suggest that it will sell a foldable phone soon. Maybe eventually, but it’s possible Apple could skip this trend entirely if it had an entirely new product category to focus on.
Here’s why the iPhone Fold isn’t coming soon
First, Apple does sell an expensive phone, but it’s not the most expensive phone you can buy from a major phone maker. That dubious honor goes to the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, a superphone that does literally everything except folds in half.

Apple charges less for its most expensive phone, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and are reflected in options that most people will not use. If Apple thinks people won’t use a stylus with a phone, it certainly knows that folding the phone isn’t a feature that will entice buyers yet.
Secondly, Apple has a pattern of introducing a new category. He never rushes to be the first. The iPad was the first major tablet, but the history of the iPhone shows that the iPad was the predecessor of the Apple smartphone. Even then, it entered the market shyly, with a device that was essentially an expanded iPhone with no risky features or design. The iPad also costs much less than the iPhone, unlike foldables, which can present a financial risk as well as a feature risk.
If foldable phones are successful, and if people start to turn away from the iPhone to buy a foldable device, Apple’s history shows that they will show interest. And then we finally got the iPhone Flip, along with grandiose pronouncements that make it seem as if Apple invented the category, or at least no one cared until Apple did.
Finally, there may never be a moment when foldable phones become mainstream. Wearable technology, especially eyewear, is waiting in the wings for its big stage moment. There is a lot of innovation that needs to happen first. Glass screens are far from ready, and battery life will be a major question.
Apple Glasses will be the next thing, not foldable
apple glasses I feel it’s inevitable, and Apple may decide that pioneering the next big step in mobile computing is more important than wasting time on dying technology. How many years before we get glasses with screens that can seamlessly blend transparent and opaque with our real world? Glasses that can last a full day? Glasses that look good and are comfortable enough that you’ll prefer them over your phone?
This account is what will determine if we will see the iPhone Flip. Foldable screens need to get a lot cheaper, so foldable prices could be within striking distance of today’s phones. Interest has to go beyond curiosity, so phones can sell themselves without explanation or excuses.
More importantly, Apple wouldn’t make a foldable phone unless making glasses seemed like a step too far. Apple may someday sell a foldable iPhone, but this iPhone Flip is not inevitable. We might have a chance for something more exciting, instead.
