Xiaomi 12S Ultra 2

Xiaomi 12S Ultra will be launched with a 1-inch sensor at a cost of $15 million

Xiaomi is all set to launch its flagship smartphone, Xiaomi 12S Ultra, on July 4. Before the phone made its way to consumers, it was marketed in big numbers. So far, all we know is that the phone will offer efficient and powerful hardware, thanks to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, and it will have a new design that comes with a gold-colored frame and a contrasting shade on the back panel. Rumors have also been circulating regarding its cameras, however, nothing has been confirmed yet apart from knowing that it could have Leica branded optics. Now, the company has unveiled the Xiaomi 12S Ultra’s cameras in full brilliance and they seem to be the main highlight of the phone. The flagship smartphone is equipped with a 1-inch sensor jointly developed by Sony. The development cost of this sensor is said to have been $15 million and the cost has been split between Sony and Xiaomi. This sensor size is used in the company’s new Sony IMX989 sensor. This is a flagship sensor by the brand and it appears for the first time on Xiaomi 12S Ultra.

While the 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor looks great, it’s not the first 1-inch sensor on a smartphone. In the past, we’ve seen a custom 1-inch sensor on the Sony Xperia Pro 1 and a 1-inch sensor from an unknown brand on the Sharp Aquos R6.

However, they both had their limitations because the one on the Sony was a 12MP lens, while the one on the Sharpe was a 20MP lens. With the new IMX989 sensor size of 1 inch, it is expected to support better optics, however, we expect it to offer an overall better camera experience.

Previous leaks indicated that the main lens used in the Xiaomi 12S Ultra phone will have a resolution of 50 megapixels. A 50MP Sony IMX989 lens with a huge sensor size will be the first on the market and this is what Xiaomi seems to be betting on.

Although nothing has been confirmed or revealed regarding its features, we can still expect it to provide better and brighter images as it will be able to capture more light, thanks to its size.

Other than the main camera, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is expected to have two other lenses – a 48MP telephoto lens (5x optical zoom) and a 48MP ultra-wide lens – making the device have a total of three cameras. The cameras here will be branded by Leica optics.
