jio to use more locally manufactured radios

Jio to use more home-made radios to roll out 5G

Reliance Geo

Reliance Jio is the only Indian telecom company that has developed a comprehensive 5G core. In fact, Jio has also announced that it has developed radios locally to go along with the core solutions. But earlier this year, Jio awarded multiple contracts to vendors, including Samsung, Ericsson, and Nokia, to help roll out 5G by providing radios. But a new development suggests that Jio will now use a higher proportion of locally developed radios. For Jio, Sanmina Corporation will manufacture radios that can work well with frequencies in the 700MHz and 3300MHz bands. Jio is the only Indian telecom company deploying sub-GHz spectrum for 5G over a (stand-alone) infrastructure.

RIL set up a JV with Sanmina to manufacture 4G and 5G radios domestically

As per an ET report, Jio is already using local radios on its networks, but the quantity or percentage is smaller. But as local manufacturing improves, Jio will start deploying more local radios on its 5G network. RIL unit (Reliance Industries Limited) – Reliance Strategic Business Ventures (RSBVL) and Sanmina announced last month a joint venture (JV) deal. The joint venture between the companies will primarily look to manufacture 4G and 5G radios. These radios will be for Indian as well as overseas markets.

Sanmina has also been selected by the government to be included in the PLI (Production Linked Incentives) scheme for the production of telecom equipment. Jio will look to export its 5G solutions to other countries as well. The carrier has developed its own 5G core network, which is an end-to-end 5G stack consisting of radio and cloud infrastructure deployment as well as cloud-native operating support systems (OSS). Jio has already deployed the 5G stack in the RIL offices, and it’s doing quite well.

According to the report, Jio is adding around 2,500 new 5G sites per week, and in the next three to four months, the carrier will look to roll out around 5,000 new 5G sites per week. Bharti Airtel is adding 1,200 new 5G sites per week at the moment. Even Airtel will increase it in the coming months.
