Ambala, 18 November

During a search, 16 mobile phones from the central prison were found here. Prison authorities also recovered earphones, data cables, mobile chargers and SIM cards.

According to the information, a search operation is underway in the central prison to retrieve mobile phones buried underground and hidden elsewhere by the inmates. During the search, 16 mobile phones, two batteries, earphones, five chargers and two SIM cards were found hidden in several places.

Gaurav Kumar, SHO at Baldev Nagar Police Station said, “We have received a complaint from the jail authorities that mobile phones, including smartphones, keypad phones, SIM cards and chargers have been retrieved from the central jail. We will collect information about the people who purchased these mobile phones within The prison and the prisoners who were using it. We will also check the details of people who were contacted from inside the prison. The case has been registered and the case is under investigation.”

Eight mobile phones were recovered from the Central Prison earlier this month.

An official said that close surveillance has been maintained with the help of CCTV cameras and that guards are also keeping vigil. People still throw mobile phones inside the prison. The government had planned to change the prison, but it would take some time.

Jail Superintendent Sanjeev Pattar said, “A special campaign is going on inside the jail to stop the use of mobile phones, drugs and extortion activities. We got information from informers that inmates burned a number of mobile phones in the oven and some of them were buried underground. During inspection and excavation, we recovered 16 mobile phones, SIM cards and chargers Now, the police will investigate the matter and identify the people involved in throwing mobile phones inside the prison and appropriate action will be taken against them.”

A high-tech call blocking system will be installed in the central prison to stop the use of cell phones by prison inmates. Besides, there is a plan to change the prison too. And both things are at the government level.”
