premium smartphone segment in india lets talk

India’s premium smartphone category: Let’s talk

Premium Smartphone

The premium smartphone market in India has been growing very fast since the pandemic. Users have realized the need and importance of powerful smartphones while living indoors. The premium hardware can enable users to play games, watch movies, do graphic work and be more comfortable. For perspective, premium smartphones are devices that cost more or more than Rs 30,000. The festive sales, which just passed, increased the demand for premium phones. It is worth noting that in the third quarter of 2022 (July-September), while the shipments of smartphones in India declined, the demand for mid-range and premium smartphones rose.

“In terms of price ranges, the premium segment (>INR 30,000) reached its all-time high of 12% during the quarter,” said Shelby Jain, Research Analyst at Counterpoint. This means that more and more users are turning to premium devices, or the demand for lower-priced smartphones is dropping. In this scenario, it could be a combination of the two, as overall smartphone shipments declined during the quarter.

What are the top brands in the premium smartphone category in India

Again, when we talk about premium smartphones, we are talking about phones priced over Rs 30,000. In India, you will find many brands in this price range. But what about the first three? The top three brands in the premium smartphone category were Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus.

Apple and Samsung mostly compete for the best smartphone manufacturer in most major global markets. But in third place was one of the most favorite brands of Indian consumers – OnePlus.

Speaking of Apple, the tech giant Cupertino managed to reach its all-time high share of 5% in India’s smartphone market this quarter. This was also due to festive sales that came around the second half of September. According to Counterpoint, the iPhone 13 became the first iPhone ever to top the nation’s total smartphone shipments in a quarter. Apple captured a whopping 40% share in smartphone shipments this quarter.

In the third quarter of 2022, Samsung took second place. Data from Counterpoint indicates that Samsung remained the top selling 5G smartphone brand in the country. The Galaxy M series and Galaxy F series phones helped the company achieve solid performance in the Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 segment.

Counterpoint data shows that OnePlus grew 35% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2022. OnePlus Nord CE 2 and OnePlus Nord 2T were the company’s drivers. In the premium segment, OnePlus remained in third place. Nord smartphone wallet has helped the company increase its market share in the price segment from Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000. In terms of 5G smartphone shipments only in Q3 2022, OnePlus was a close second, which means that Indian users trust Samsung and OnePlus devices a lot when it comes to 5G.
