Ericsson consumer study shows 5G is already paving the way to the metaverse

As the uptake of 5G networks in many parts of the world bridges a milestone from early adopters to mass adoption, Ericsson’s research – one of the largest global industry study of its kind to date – confirms consumers’ growing commitment to 5G and their expectations for next-generation uses. cases.

Call 5G: the next waveEricsson ConsumerLab’s report examines the impact that 5G technology has had on early consumers since its launch in various countries, as well as measuring the intent – and related expectations of subscribers – to use the technology. The report predicts that at least 30% of smartphone users intend to subscribe to 5G within the next year.

Ericsson’s mix of tracking data covering 5G launches since 2019 and a new consumer survey has allowed the Ericsson Consumer Lab to identify six key trends affecting the next wave of 5G adoption.

The report covers behavioral changes resulting from the bundling of digital services into 5G plans by telecom service providers – particularly the increased use of enhanced video and augmented reality (AR) applications.

The report also looks at the speed of mainstream 5G adoption, whether consumer demands are being met and 5G-related changes in smartphone behavior – and their impact on network traffic.

More than 49,000 consumers in 37 countries were interviewed for this research – one of the industry’s largest 5G global consumer surveys to date and the largest consumer survey conducted by Ericsson on any topic. The scope of the survey represents the opinions of about 1.7 billion consumers around the world, including 430 million 5G subscribers.

“The scope of the research gives us real insight into consumers’ perspectives and attitudes toward 5G,” said Jasmeet Singh Sethi, Head of Consumer Lab at Ericsson. The report shows that the next wave of potential 5G users have different expectations of the technology than early adopters. In general, consumers see interaction with 5G as an essential part of their future lifestyles.

“It is interesting to note that 5G is emerging as an important enabler for early adopters to embrace metaverse-related services, such as socializing, gaming, and purchasing digital items in interactive 3D virtual gaming platforms. The amount of time 5G users spend in augmented reality applications has also doubled in the past two years.” .

The report anticipates that 5G consumers with experience using extended reality (XR) functionality will be the first to adopt future devices because they are more positive about the capabilities of the mixed reality glasses. Half of 5G users who already use XR-related services each week believe AR apps will move from smartphones to XR headphones within the next two years, compared to a third of 4G consumers who hold this view.
