Qatar refuses to use Israeli mobile phones during the World Cup – Middle East Monitor

The Qatari government has refused to cooperate with Israeli telecom companies in order to power their mobile phones during the World Cup later this month.

Israeli channel Kan 11 reported that 10,000 to 20,000 Israelis will attend the 2022 World Cup in Doha, indicating that they will have to purchase Qatari SIMs to make calls.

The Israeli Minister of Communications, Yoaz Hendel, sent a letter to the President of FIFA and the United Nations, requesting assistance in communicating with cellular companies in Qatar that refuse to cooperate with Israeli companies.

“We want to help you in ensuring the cooperation of the host country with all countries, especially since the talk is about international competitions,” he wrote.

Qatar also rejected a request to open a temporary Israeli consulate in Doha to deal with Israeli visitors during the tournament, but reached an agreement with FIFA in June to allow Israelis to purchase tournament tickets and enter Qatar. Israeli passport holders are usually not allowed to enter the Gulf country.
