Apple may be preparing to design upcoming products with OLED panels manufactured by Samsung, according to NotebookCheck (via The Elec).
Devices expected to receive the panels range from iPads to MacBooks to foldable laptops, the latter of which the brand has yet to offer, as well as the Apple Studio Display.
UBI Research analysts at a recent seminar in Seoul had most of the details about the future Studio Display model, claiming that Samsung is currently developing 27-inch QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) panels in its A5 manufacturing line. According to analysts, the main customer of Samsung is expected to be Apple.
The relationship will likely continue exclusively after that, giving Apple the upper hand over its competitors.
Notably, there are several suggestions for which display components your next Apple Studio Display will use. Reports in October indicated that Apple’s 27-inch external mini display had been delayed until 2023 due to high cost concerns. However, analysts expect the Apple Studio OLED display to be released sometime in 2024.
If current reports are accurate, this will be Apple’s first monitor with an OLED screen. Previous monitors, including the original Studio Monitor and Pro Display XDR, used traditional IPS screen technology. We’ve seen QD-OLED screens, of course, like the Alienware 34 QD-OLED screens, but so far they’ve been limited to large, curved gaming screens.
Reports have concluded that Apple may team up with both Samsung and LG on its first OLED iPad in 2024, using panels made from an eighth-generation substrate. The publication added that these panels are usually larger and last longer than those used on smartphones.
Finally, Apple is expected to start offering MacBooks with these OLED panels in 2025. Analysts also claim that Samsung and LG hope their display segments will have new OLED technologies mastered and commercialized by 2025, so they can benefit from their application On upcoming Apple devices.
Apple also has a future goal of offering laptops with foldable display panels. Reports indicated that Apple has a “foldable laptop” with a 20-inch screen in its production line for the 2026 or 2027 timeframe.
