New Delhi: They say the best is always saved for the last. This is true for smartphone makers as they prefer to launch their premium devices in the second half of the calendar year. This applies to all companies including US-based tech giant Apple, South Korean tech company Samsung and Chinese mobile phone maker OnePlus.

For example, Apple will launch its iPhone 14 series in September 2022, and Samsung will launch two of its flagship devices – Galaxy Fold 4 and Galaxy Flip 4 ~ On August 10, the technology brand of Google announced the availability of its recently launched smartphone, Google Pixel 6a, in India this month.

Similarly, the Chinese mobile phone brand OnePlus unveiled the OnePlus 10T in August 2022. Motorola announced the Moto Razr 2022 and Moto Edge X30 Pro in August 2022.

Faisal Qawsah, founder and chief analyst at Techarc, said that although smartphones continued to be sold throughout the year, the second half sold more, overall more than 55% of the total sales volume.

“This is due to the festive season all over the world, including India. We have, for example, Diwali falling in the second half of the year. Such festive seasons give consumers more money to spend in terms of festival rewards etc., said Faisal Qawsah. , along with keeping up with the elevated shopping vibe, complementing the festive fervor.

Even research proves this statement. About 20% of annual smartphone sales by value occur during one month of the festive season in India, said Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint Research. For premium phones, it’s even higher, at around 25%.

“People usually wait for this time to upgrade, so OEMs are planning to launch their products and bring out their best products,” Pathak added.

Mobile phone makers will pin their hopes on sales in the second half of the year, as the global smartphone market saw a further decline in the second quarter, with shipments down 9% year-on-year to 294.5 million units.

The reason for this drop in sales is deteriorating economic conditions, which have been exacerbated by the ongoing geopolitical uncertainty caused by the war in Ukraine, which has weakened an industry that has not yet fully recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic and chip shortages.

The situation is similar in the Indian market where smartphone shipments in India grew by 9% YoY but declined by 5% QoQ to nearly 37 million units in Q2 2022 (April-June).
